Welcome to the Midwest Gateway Chapter of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). As one of the 49 affiliated chapters of HIMSS, our purpose is to bring healthcare professionals together to promote the exchange of knowledge and experiences, provide timely communication regarding emerging healthcare IT issues, and to assist members in their professional growth. For 2010/2011, the Midwest Gateway Chapter will focus its programs, events, and activities in three areas: timely and relevant education, visibility as to the role and resources of HIMSS both locally and nationally, and professional development of our members.

These are dynamic times for healthcare IT. Hospitals and other healthcare facilities have accelerated their efforts to implement state-of-the-art electronic systems to capture, manage, and maintain clinical, operational, and financial information related to the delivery of care. Emerging legislation at the national level is focused on expanding the role of healthcare IT to ensure the delivery of high quality care at the lowest cost with the greatest access within our communities. Health Information Exchanges, Meaningful Use, Healthcare Reform, ICD-10, Health Informatics, Business Intelligence, and other health IT topics and trends add the complexity of implementing and managing an effective IT strategy at this time.

As the local chapter of a large international member-based not-for-profit organization, we hope to provide the appropriate forum for our 400+ members for educational, networking, advocacy, and professional development events and activities. As a member-run organization, we welcome any and all members who are interested in becoming active in the local chapter to contact myself or one of the other Midwest Chapter Board members.

Thank you for your interest and support of the Midwest Gateway Chapter of HIMSS. We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming chapter meetings and events.

Best regards,

David A. Butler, BS, MBA
President, Midwest Gateway Chapter HIMSS
