Welcome to the Midwest Gateway Chapter of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS).
As one of the 49 affiliated chapters of HIMSS, an international not-for-profit organization with over 35,000 individual members, 520 corporate members and 120 not-for-profit organizations, we share the mission of transforming healthcare through the effective use of information technology and management systems.
The purpose of our Chapter is to provide healthcare and information technology professionals in our region with a forum to promote the exchange of knowledge and experiences, provide timely communication regarding emerging healthcare IT issues, and to assist members and students in their professional growth.
We have nearly 600 members from healthcare provider organizations, medical schools and universities, technology developers, not-for-profit organizations and government entities. Our region encompasses the St. Louis Metropolitan Area, Eastern and Central Missouri, and Southern Illinois.
The Midwest Gateway Chapter provides educational programs, networking events and activities to provide timely and relevant education, advocacy and information resources for legislators, visibility for the role of healthcare information technology and informatics in our region, and the professional development of our members and healthcare IT students.
These are exciting times for the healthcare IT industry with rapid developments in the use of technology in the delivery of health care. Hospitals and other healthcare facilities have accelerated their efforts to implement state-of-the-art electronic systems to capture, manage, and maintain clinical, operational, and financial information related to the delivery of care.
Emerging legislation at the national level is focused on expanding the role of healthcare IT to ensure the delivery of high quality care at the lowest cost with the greatest access within our communities. Health Information Exchanges, Meaningful Use, Healthcare Reform, ICD-10, Health Informatics, Business Intelligence, and other health IT topics and trends add the complexity of implementing and managing an effective IT strategy.
